About Lundrigan Roots Upper Island Cove
John Lundrigan, a well known 'son of Upper Island Cove', recently passed away. John was
the first native Upper Island Cover to sit as an MP in the Parliament of Canada. I
am sure that many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have followed Mr. Lundrigan's career
with great interest and admiration. Personally, growing up at Upper Island Cove during
the 50s and 60s, I believe that many in my generation looked to John Lundrigan as a
role model as we aspired to higher levels of education and leadership.
Peter Miller, as well known CBC host, recently was moved to express these words “Just
heard of John Lundrigan's passing earlier this month. To his surviving family members
I wanted to pass a message, if it is possible. Mr. Lundrigan was one of a very few
politicians who I greatly admired for his honestly, conviction, and motivation. I
interviewed literally thousands of politicians while a current affairs host for CBC
Radio from the mid 70's to the mid 90's and to me, John Lundrigan was a bright light
amongst a very mediocre crew. Like many others, I will miss his very considerable
admirable qualities. I didn't know he was Anglican but being a lay reader I feel
compelled to add: may his soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace
and may light perpetual shine upon them. God Bless.”
